Surround yourself with calm for 2016

Maybe we really do get wiser with age. I find that my aesthetic preference has changed over the years to become more streamlined, unfussy and more comfortable. Clean lines make a room look neat and uncluttered. I have moved away from the heavy carved wood tables and chair frames and dark colors.

Color will also set the tone of a room. Recently, I tackled the project of painting our master bedroom/sitting room. I thought of how I could create an atmosphere of “beachy calm”. After pondering three paint samples on my wall, I decided on Woodlawn Blue by Benjamin Moore, a light soft teal. Later, it was announced that the Pantone color of the year 2016 is “Serenity” – a dreamy, soft blue. Colors like soft pale grey, blue & creams evoke the calmness of the ocean. Using these colors in layers of fabrics for a bed canopy, window sheers and drapes, and a tufted velvet bench at the end of the bed will add dimension of a calming feel.
