Mixing Patterns (To Create a Playful Environment)

One common denominator when it comes to designing the perfect space, is fabric selection. I think we can all vouch for the hours that have been consumed by searching for the right fabric combination. We want the space to be easy on the eyes to all of our guests, but still be playful and cozy to our own. One way to create that perfect, playful environment is by pattern mixing! I know what you’re thinking-“pattern mixing? Yuck!”- BUT, when done correctly, different patterns combined together can actually create a fun environment! Mixing patterns throughout the space creates a playful texture to our minds eye, just like different materials provide different textures to our touch! So, how do we combine patterns without the space looking too busy? The trick is as follows:

  • Stick to Your Patterns Style
  • Vary Patterns by Scale, Design, and Shape
  • Follow Your Color Schematics

As long as you stick to your design style, mix up the overall size of the patterns, play with different shapes, and stay with-in your color palette, you will create a playful environment that flows throughout your space!

Have fun mixing!

Today's Home

When Sigmund and Audrey Lenchner, both Taylor Allderdice graduates, founded Today’s Home, they had a vision to enrich the lives of area families by bringing true quality home furnishings to Western Pennsylvania. Over the decades, Today’s Home has emerged as a true “family business” success story. Through the years, our dedicated employees have managed to grow the company in an age dominated by big box retailing and mega chains.

Now Today’s Home, with its roots firmly planted in the luxury residential furnishings market, has additional operating companies in Designer Furniture Outlet Stores and TH TRADE Commercial. DFO has become the luxury closeout treasure-hunter’s favorite haunt. Our newest addition, TH TRADE, provides ASID level design to our commercial contract customers. We invite you to contact a Today’s Home designer to visit our showroom and see the world of possibilities awaiting you at Today’s Home.
