Working at an Interior Design Furnishings Store, I get asked this question often.
Many pillows may look alike but they can be very different.
First and most important is the filling type. Filling is what makes the pillow firm, soft, hard, cushy, flat, hold its form or allow you to shape as you desire. They range from man made fibers of many types to feathers and down to a variety of newer generation fillers made from “greener” options like vegetable products and even recycled materials.
Second is the fabric and embellishments. Look is often the most important driving factor. Is it traditional, contemporary, bold colors or soft muted colors, stripes, pattern or solid, The list goes on and on.
When deciding on a pillow I suggest thinking about how the pillow will be used will it be sitting in a room that is rarely used? if so possibly look and price will be the main factors. However, If this is something that will be touched, handled, used, placed behind heads for comfort, held and petted while enjoying your favorite beverage, etc. many more factors come into play. Is the feel soft and touchable like a velvet or hard and unforgiving like a tapestry? Will you like to “fluff” your pillow often to keep it looking its best or would you like one more “maintenance free” that holds it’s shape? Is it “pet friendly’?
Each fill and fabric has a variety options and characteristics that can be complicated for the “pillow novice” but a trained Interior designer can guide you thru the “pillow maze” with ease to help you make the selection that best suites your desired outcome, giving you the best options for use, look, feel, style preference and budget!
