Cushions

Small decisions, such as those regarding cushions, are often over-looked but can make a big impact.  These decisions are guilt-free because there is no wrong answer; it is a matter of personal preference. The seat cushion cores often come in a variety of materials. A firmer material allows you to sit “on” the piece instead of “in” the piece. If you want a cozier feel, you may want to opt for a softer material.  Be careful, however, if grandma is a frequent visitor! She might find it difficult to get out of a super plush sofa! Another option for seat cushions is having “t-cushions” versus “full-front” cushions by the arms. T-cushions are used when the arms are offset from the front of the sofa itself. A small part of the cushion extends around the front of the arm, creating a T.  This creates a more traditional look. A slightly more transitional or contemporary look would be comprised of a “front” arm and “full-front” cushion. This means that the arms extend all the way to the front of the sofa, and the cushions are more true rectangles. We recommend frequent flipping and rotating of seat cushions to maintain shape and insure longevity. T-cushions do not offer as many rotating and flipping options because the ends can only be switched with each other. After you have decided on a seat cushion, there are a few decisions to be made regarding the back cushions. One option you have is the treatment of the seams. Would you like to have two seams along the edges to create a more structured back pillow or one seam around the edge to create a more comfortable look? Also, you can often choose whether or not to attach the back cushions to the frame. We typically suggest detached or “loose” back cushions to enable that rotation and flipping to keep shape and minimize wear. However, some people desire attached back cushions because they find their furry friends enjoy laying on the tops of their back cushions, and this keeps the cushions from sagging under the weight of their pets! Remember the decisions you make regarding your furniture affect everyone in the house!!
